Hebrew Word Study – Seed of God – Jezreel – יִזְרְעֶֽאל Yod Zayin Resh Ayin Aleph Lamed
Hosea 1:11 Then shall the children of Judah and the children of Israel be gathered together, and appoint themselves one head, and they shall come up out of the land: for great [shall be] the day of Jezreel.
Jezreel is a compound word zara’ – seed, el – God, seed of God. This is a prophecy of the future of Israel when they will all be united after being scattered throughout the world. This scattering happened with the fall of Jerusalem to the Romans in 70 AD about 800 years after this prophecy was given and over 2,000 years and counting for the eventual reuniting of Israel unless we consider 1948 as the fulfillment of this prophecy.
Most Christian commentators will say that the name Jezreel is given to Israel to signify the reuniting of the faith but Jewish commentators have a different take on this. They see this idea of the seed of God – Jezreel as the planting of the seed of knowledge of God throughout the world when they were scattered after the fall of Jerusalem in 70 AD. Indeed many religions which have popped up over the last 2,000 years show some signs of Jewish teaching. Even Native Americans have symbols and teachings which reflect the teachings of Judaism. Rabbis Samson Hirsch says: “Many ideals of duty and loving kindness, the search for truth and the quest for right, and even the invocation of God, became ideals which were gleaned by other faiths from the Law of the Teachings of Judaism and spread through the nations.”
Both Christianity starting in the first century and Islam in the eighth century, the two major religions in the world, were birthed from Judaism. Religions such as Buddhism and Hinduism adopted many of the teachings of Judaism into their religion.
Truly Hosea’s prophecy has seen reality as the Jews have truly become Jezreel the planters of the seed of knowledge of God. Sure other religions have gone off on their own ideas and teachings but there is a seed there. It is a seed that is meant to grow. Missionaries for years have been watering that seed, that tiny bit of knowledge of God which the Holy Spirit can use to bring one to the true knowledge of Jehovah and His love and purpose for mankind.

The Jews are called the chosen people, not because they were created special, to be God’s special pet so to speak. They were chosen to keep the true knowledge of God and His love, the purity of the desire and will of God to share with the nations. I have studied the works of Judaism and the teachings of the rabbis and sages for over 45 years and nothing I have gleaned and incorporated into my personal faith has altered my fundamental beliefs in the slightest. I can still in good conscience sign the doctrinal statement of my alma mater Moody Bible Institute which is a center for conservative, evangelical Christianity.
Many comment on my expressions of a love for God and the love of God for us, my desire and longing for intimacy with God. I can truly say all of this is the result of Jezreel, the seed of God that has been planted by God’s chosen people. We as Christians owe a great debt to Jezreel and their efforts and sacrifices throughout history to preserve the knowledge of God. In fact had it not been for Esther the Jewish faith would have died out and the knowledge of Jehovah would have been lost. If not for the Maccabees the knowledge of Jehovah would have been lost to the world. Next time Hanukkah comes around remember, if not for Hanukkah there would be no Christmas. I know God would have made another way, but He did not have to do it another way for the Jews were faithful in their calling as the chosen people to keep the knowledge of God pure and alive.
Even today Israel stands as a beacon of the knowledge of God. Why is it that nobody except some bonehead reporter ever questions Israel about having nuclear weapons but yet, the world is fearful of Iran having nuclear weapons? The answer is almost rhetorical. Everyone is confident that Israel will not use nuclear weapons offensively, only for defense. Iran can swear all they want that they want nuclear weapons for defensive purposes, but no one believes them. Syria is the sworn enemy of Israel, yet guess who provides the most medical aid and allows nations to use their land as a staging area to defend Syria. Israel has only executed one person since its founding, Adolf Eichman. A terrorist can kill a hundred people in a café and if caught by the Israelis the terrorist will not be executed. Israel has shown their willingness to trade a hundred terrorist prisoners to redeem one Israeli soldier. Yet, the world hates Israel, because to love Israel means you love their God and what He stands for.
The Jewish people are still Jezreel, the seed of God and because of the planting of that seed Christianity will flourish. It is my hope that in the near future I will be adding on our website a daily tribute to the Jewish people, Jezreel with a simple quote of wisdom from Jewish literature that I have gleaned over the last forty years.
So let me leave you with this bit of wisdom from Jezreel found in the Talmud in Chullin 84b: “A man should eat and drink less than his means, clothe himself according to his means, and honor his wife and children beyond his means.”
Zechariah 8:23: “Thus saith the LORD of hosts; In those days [it shall come to pass], that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard [that] God [is] with you.”

Thanks & Blessings, it means a lot to me!
You can count me as one of those taking hold of Zechariah 8:23. It’s amazing how many people calling themselves Christians hate the Jewish people. To do that you have to hate Jesus and the disciples. How can you be a Christian if you hate Jesus? I don’t get that, God will deal with them. I had an aunt by marriage who was a Jew. My biggest regret, being a kid, I didn’t understand enough to ask her questions about the Jewish people and their faith. Thank you for sharing your knowledge of the Jewish language. Our Pastor always, always used Hebrew in her sermons. And taught us how to find the meanings of the words in the Bible. Thank you.
Shalom Shalom
Iam extremely blessed by this study.
My love for God and Israel is increasing through this literature.
Thanks for your obedience to the Lord.
Shabbat Shalom
Thank you for such an inspiring and informative article. For some reason two days ago the word, “seed” came across my mind and what, how and why seeds have periods of dormancy. I looked up the information and discovered it was a complex situation with many causes differing from species to species. The oldest it seemed was dormant for over 2,000 years. Some only come alive after fire has freed them from their outer coatings. Seeds of God planted throughout the world via early Judaism and later cultivated by missionaries faces many of the same challenges as that of plant seeds. I am always in amazement of how God uses the physical world to reflect spiritual truths bringing wisdom. I admire the Jewish people for their steadfast dedication to the Lord. He is unrivaled in every way and if we just keep our eyes open He will reveal many things to us by watching the natural world and by keeping our eyes in Israel.
Great reminder for me to always consider that deposited sees.
