Hebrew Word Study: Enosh -mortal אֱנוֹשׁ
Genesis 37:15 And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field: and the man asked him, saying, What seekest thou?
I find this story really curious. Joseph was searching for his brothers to deliver a message from their father. This journey led to Joseph being thrown into a pit by his brothers, sold into slavery, thrown into an Egyptian prison and becoming the prime minister of the most powerful nation in the known world. All these event would not have happened had it not been for some unnamed man who found Joseph wandering in the field looking for his brothers and giving him certain directions to his brothers. Poor Joseph was lost but thanks to this unsung hero he put Joseph back on God’s path.

Who was this man. The Hebrew Bible calls him simply an haish which is just a man. Saturday in our Torah study we are going to talk about this man and other unknown people who suddenly appear to provide direction. Are these angels? Rashi says it was the archangel Gabriel. Was this a friend of Joseph or his father Jacob. I doubt that, if he was a friend the Bible would have named him. Was it just an ordinary man herding sheep in the wilderness? Maybe he was an alien. I talk about that in my book on stargates and time travel. Perhaps angels are merely descendents of Adam who passed through stargates to inhabit other planets and return to assist us, we will discuss that on Saturday morning as well.
One thing is certain, God often sends us direction in a very tangible way. The Bible says we entertain angels unaware. The word angels is malekim which merely means messenger. Perhaps we all at one time or another were a malekim or entertained a melekim unaware of it and it turned out to just be another person who loves God and follows His direction. But when the time comes God may send us a miracle or a message not from a ten foot winged celestial being in combat boots, but just an ordinary person. In fact some are called to be a path finder who spiritual gift is just that.
Tomorrow we will be discussing the story of Jacob’s wrestling in the weekly Torah Portion Teaching to explore more about who exactly these people, or strangers, or angels actually are. Why not enjoy church from the comfort of your home? Here in Chicago it’s really cold and I’m thrilled to meet with like minded people for an interesting study and conversation. All recordings are recorded to view at any time. Hope to see you there www.HebrewWordStudy.com
