Hebrew Word Study – Passover – Pesach – פֶסַח  Pei Samek Cheth

Luke 22:19- 20: “And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. (20) Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.”

The Passover meal consist of bread and wine. The Last Supper was a Passover meal. In this meal Jesus spoke some cryptic words about the bread and wine. He said the bread was His body and the wine was His blood. The disciples spent 3 years with Jesus teaching in the method of Jewish teachers which involved many metaphors and filled with symbolism. Disciples did not have recorders or note books to take notes. They had to depend upon their memories to engrave the words of the teacher, in this case Jesus, into their minds and hearts.

To aid in this exercise of memory teachers as rabbis do today depend upon metaphors and symbolism in their teachings. Ancient teachers used many memory tricks from association, word plays, rhymes and the gematria. Gematria involved finding the numerical value of each word. Hebrew letters were also numbers. The teacher would match the numerical value of a word or words with another word or words and discuss the relationship between the two.

For instance Jesus lifted the bread which is spelled Lamed =30, Cheth=8, Mem= 40 for a total of 78 and said this is His body. Then. He lifted the wine which is yiin spelled Yod = 10, Yod = 10, Nun= 50 for a a total of 70. 70 wine + 78 bread = 148. The word for Passover is Pesach spelled Pei = 80, Samek = 60, Cheth = 8 total 148 which is the same as bread and wine. Bread and wine are the center of the Passover.

So big deal? Well, during the Seder meal 4 cups of wine are drunk. 4X70 (wine)=280. Add in the bread 78+280 and you have 358. So what other word has a value of 358? There is a word spelled Mem = 40, Shin = 300, Yod = 10 and Cheth = 8 which totals 358. Four cups of wine drunk during the Seder as well as the bread and what do you have is the word Meshiach or Messiah. The very center of the Pasech is found in the four cups of wine and bread 358 which points to the Messiah 358. Jesus was declaring to his disciples in coded language that He was the Messiah.

This week the Jews celebrate the Pesach  with bread and four cps of wine 358. This year when the Passover ends we Christians pick up where the Jews leave off and celebrate the death and resurrection of the Messiah 358.
