HEBREW WORD STUDY: ALMOND (TREE) שָׁקֵד shaqed
Jeremiah 1:11-12 And the word of the LORD came to me, saying, “What do you see, Jeremiah?” And I said, “I see a branch of an almond tree.”Then the LORD said to me, “You have seen well, for I am watching over My word to perform it.”
The word of the Lord came to me saying “What do you see Jeremiah?” And I said I see a rod of an Almond “saqed” שָׁקֵד tree. Then the Lord said to me, “You have seen well, for I am watching “soqed” שָׁקַד, over my word to perform it. Both the word for Almond, and the word for watching, come from the same root word- שׁקד
Here is the Remez (Hint to go deeper): Why did God use an Almond tree to show that His word will come to pass?
In these verses, we have what is called a “Play on Words” which is something very prevalent in scripture, though often only seen in the Hebrew. One of its purposes is to give greater insight and intention behind the Author’s words. We have in verse 11 “saqed” which means “almond” and verse 12 “soqed” which means an “intense watching over”. So why did God choose an almond tree to show how His Word will come to pass?

In Israel, the Almond tree is one of the earliest to bloom and actually blossoms in late winter. The process from the branch growing and ready to yield fruit takes two years but from this point, literally overnight, a beautiful white flower appears. In fact, it happens so quickly sometimes the blossoms will form even before its leaves grow. After a long wait the tree SUDDENLY blossoms. How many are waiting for their “suddenly”, and their ” breakthrough”? I’m one who is, and a few years back when the Lord gave me this verse I asked for a confirmation that He really was watching over His Word concerning specifics in my life. I asked Jesus to please wake me up at 1:11 am, and since I always sleep through the night, I knew if it happened it would be God confirming this promise. Well, that night I woke up out of a deep sleep and turned over to watch the clock turn exactly 1:11! I share this for everyone who is waiting for their fulfillment of a Word given by God. He is diligently watching over His word to you, making sure to fulfill it.
This tree is a picture of strength and endurance because though this flower looks fragile and delicate, it can withstand harsh winter winds and rain, James 1:2-4 Consider it all a joy, my brethren when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance, and let endurance have its perfect result, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.
The almond tree blossom heralds the soon arrival of spring. In the Spirit, many find ourselves toward the end of a very long winter. Well, hold on because (spiritual) spring is coming and your sudden breakthrough of God’s word is about to blossom and its bear fruit.

Thanks & Blessings, it means a lot to me!
Thank you so very much for this teaching!!! I too am waiting on breakthroughs!!! This really gave me hope and lifted ny heart to keep looking for the breakthrough!!! I have been waiting many many years, and I wondered if maybe it was just not going to be granted, but I believe now it will, but in His time. Thank you for the encouragement to keep waiting for it.
Love this confirmation, thank you.
Aaron’s Rod was the almond branch.
This rod represents resurrection
Moses used Aaron’s rod in the meeting with Pharoah and it turned to a snake and consumed Pharoahs snakes.
Jesus was the snake lifted up on the cross
Thank you for sharing. Resurrection…I like that!
Chaim, I encourage you to look at Proverbs 4:24 Va’Lezuwth ולזות
I think you’ll find something that interest you here when you start digging into this word.
Blessing to you and Laura, and thank y’all for the studies.
So? Which is it? Shaqed or Saqed? I like these teachings but have quit buying the books because of all the typos and bad editing.
Ive learned enough about the aleph bet to know when the Hebrew is being spelled wrong, or a word is written that doesnt match the letters, for instance: page 96 of Treasures of the Deep: nun-tsade-shin does not seem to spell naqash. I hate to loan these books to youngsters just learning hebrew as they get confused and hand it back to me saying this is junk and confusing. Sorry. Otherwise I love your humble teaching style.
There is no miss spelling in my study. You may have a basic understanding of the alphabet, but knowing the alphabet does not give you even a basic understanding of Biblical Hebrew. We have a Learning Channel, where Chaim teaches both the basics and the advance B.H. where you can learn more about why these words have different vowels but the same verbal root. For any miss spelled words in a book, you need to contact the Publisher who is responsible for that.
“A spiritual spring is coming!” Sweet, wonderful thought. And James 1:2-4; the perfect verses for the day. I love God’s timing through your ministry.
Thank you for sharing!
Once again I am well-fed by your Word Study. The idea of being perfect and COMPLETE helps me understand the meaning of Shalom! Thank you again and again and again!
Dear Chaim and Laura, I thoroughly enjoy reading your lessons! I like to share with my group of ladies (4 of us), actually I send them out sometimes to 11 of us! Thanks so much for sharing!!! I found I have had to “unlearn” some things! :)
Really appreciate your biblical input and comments. Let’s REMEZ, go deeper.
Yes! Let’s “Remez” : )
Very, very helpful, reassuring and encouraging!
Thank you so much for this wonderful insight…and may the
promise for you come to pass quickly Chaim!
Thank you Dear Teacher Laura,
This was truly beautiful and inspirational . Trees play an important part in the Bible . This bring to mind the story of when Jesus destroyed the fig tree . I couldn’t understand why He would destroy a good tree . It wasn’t time for figs . I didn’t understand because at that time I didn’t know about fig trees or Jewish law .
Let me first go back to the story of Adam and Eve . I believe that since Adam and Eve represents all of humanity this story didn’t just happen thousands of years ago ,but will keep happening until Jesus comes again . Man will continually fall and turn to false gods and false teaching . I believe that the nakedness of Adam and Eve is symbolic of lack of the wisdom that can come only from knowing God . The fig leaves that they covered themselves with is symbolic of false gods often made of wood . The coat of skin that God gave them is His word and it came through skin (the prophets ) on skin (Torah Scrolls) and in skin His Beloved Son Jesus .
Now it get back to the fig tree . Fig trees get their figs before they get their leaves and by that time the harvesters would have been there, but by law they would have left some figs for the poor and others .The tree that Jesus destroyed had no fruit so it was and is symbolic of false gods and false teaching that produce no fruit .
May the Word of God keep you all and comfort you !
I like your perspective, thank you for sharing!
